1. White Heat , 2003-11-22
   Boris Pasternak's "Doctor Zhivago" has at times been mistakenly perceived as a Classic in the same mold as "The Brothers Karamazov" for example. But it isn't and shouldn't be treated as such for it is a popular novel, written in the 1950's. I suppose it has taken on this patina because of the time of its story: the early 1900's in Russia and that it deals with characters who are bigger than life, who love wisely but not well and whose lives take turns based on the pull, not only of nature, but of history.
   Director Giacomo Compiotti's PBS version is stellar in many ways: first of all in the Zhivago of Hans Matheson. His is a human, muscular, loving and caring performance not the wooden stoic one of Omar Sharif in the 1965 version. But Keira Knightley is not yet, at this stage of her young career, on the same level as Julie Christie's luminous Lara, though Knightley's Lara definitely has scenes of uncommon grace and humanity.
   The 1965 version directed by the sublime David Lean cannot be faulted in the design and implementation of its physical production but this version is noteworthy for its intimate, character driven focus. We get to know and appreciate the characters better here because the story is filmed to fit our televisions screens and must therefore sacrifice the huge vistas for the more intimate settings.
   Due to its four-hour running time, we are able to see much more of the Zhivago story and this has its good points as well as its bad. But ultimately this "Dr Zhivago" succeeds because of the goodness of its soul: its golden and autumnal story once again pulls at our heartstrings as well as fascinates our minds.
   
    
2. Well worth Owning , 2004-02-22
   Very impressive remake. Bravo Mr. Campiotti and production crew I was more than skeptical about his new version of Doctor Zhivago, a remake of David Lean's Classic But then why not And thank goodness Hans Matheson and Keira Knightly add new demensions to the characters of Zhivago and Lara. I liked Lara much better this time around than in Lean's film and have a much better understanding of her motivation, who she is, and why Zhivago would venture into a love affair with her. Poor Tonya In many ways I prefer this small screen version to Lean's great epic. My only complaint...and not much of that...is the score's musical cues...which remind this is a tv production. I had to keep reminding myself this version was written and shot for the tv screen as opposed to a theater. But there are some lovely musical themes. The interviews in special features with the director, writer, producer, and actors is well worth viewing. I am going to make a concentrated effort as result to read the book. What is extraodinary about this story is Zhivago's ability to find beauty in life, and love, in a particualry ugly time in history,a time of great suffering. To have awareness you are alive in your own liftetime, that life is both remarkable and wonderful Zhivago's sensitivity comes across but was always aloof in David Lean's version. Sam Neill is a great Kamarvosky. What a delicious role The sex scenes are filmed with taste and are in no way sensationalized. I give this version 5 stars. It was a difficult task bringing this concept to reality having Lean's version hanging over the production.
   
    
3. Completelly true romance , 2004-07-08
   I recorded Dr. Zivago when it came out on KCET...and this movie is completely romantic for the people who truely look at the hearth of love... I really recomand this movie for the people who believe that their is always a chance in life to be together with your true love... even if society and time separate you...
   
    
4. Beautiful. , 2004-06-29
   I never thought they could re-make one of the most wonderful love stories of all time and have it be credible, but it was done--I was blown away. I intended just to watch the first hour on TV but ended up staying for all four Incredibly moving, and i am so glad its on DVD.
   
    
5. Is something wrong with my TV , 2004-01-30
   I would be only too happy to give this adaptation 4 stars, maybe even 4 1/2, but there seems to be a slight problem. My dvd displays the film in an anamorphic shape, making it vital for me to have a widescreen TV. The image is stretched so everyone is tall and skinny. Hard to watch for long.

   Okay, now that that rant is out of the way I will say this: The David Lean version of Zhivago is my favorite movie. As a filmmaker I enjoy it for it's richness. The morality of the story leaves much to be desired, but can be explained by the desperate times that it takes place. I watched this version with certain expectations which were both too high and too low. Despite that I still enjoyed it very much. The cast was solid and the production value high. I even enjoyed the music though it was SO different from Maurice Jarre's brilliant score. That was actually a good point.

   If you have to make a choice (and you don't right now) between the two films I recommend the first, but the new one is an admirable effort... that sounds demeaning. It's quite good. And Keira is beautiful.

6. After a couple of screenings I found a great surprise.... , 2004-01-21
   As a tv production professor I'm one of the freaks that can easily watch a movie or a scene 200 times, break it into pieces and put it up together again. Personally I'm not a big fan of the idea of the remaking of a classic... I see film as art and no one would validate a remaking of Picasso's Guernica. But WBGH Boston and the BBC has a quality trademark that is worth seeing.

   In my humble opinion the art direction is the star of this film. And into this category the remarkable transformation of one of the characters that was the only one that aged with credibility and seems no one noticed: Misha Gordon, performed by the very young italian actor Daniele Liotti.

   Searching for more information at the IMDB site I was surprised to find out that Liotti was the lead actor in Spain's Oscar entry for 2001 Mad Love (Juana La Loca). Few times you find an actor with such convincing physical range. Definitively someone to watch.

   i really liked watching this flim it totall y touched my heart. and the actors and actresses where really good in this mini series. hans matheson and all the actors gave good performances in this movie.

8. Actually, more 3.5 stars... , 2003-12-09
   ...or perhaps 3.75 -- I approached this TV version with an open mind. I love the 1965 movie for many reasons, but I'm not fanatic about it. In fact I prefer the novel to either version. But to get back to the TV version -- I was disappointed in Ms. Knightley as Lara, I thought she seemed much too 21st century-London, or something that I just can't express. I just could not believe for a minute that she was a person living in Russia in the early 20th century. This was a major flaw for me. Also, and this is not a jibe at the show, but the sex scenes were kind of explicit, which is definitely not the case in the book And I cannot figure out why they made Lara & Yuri's child a boy, when in the book she's quite definitely a girl. I have to disagree with the reviewer who said that the music was only serviceable, or something like that; I thought the soundtrack was very good, & very moving. Other than these critical comments, I enjoyed this. But it's still the novel that's the most moving "version" of all.
   
    
9. Beautiful Love Story: Matheson & Keira Knightlely(2003 AD) , 2003-12-06
   To: Fans of Russian Literature, Film, or Tele-Film.

   This motion picture came out on Exxon Mobiles Master Piece Theatre, and the Re-Make of Dr.Schivago(for 2003 AD) Is really very Beautiful. This is an Upgrade from the Original Version of the 20th Century. The cast is fabulous, it has the Charismatic and Handsome Hans Matheson & the beautiful Keira Knightley. They simply look incredible on the box cover with Russian Clothing, and look beautiful as a couple on here. One who has read this story knows
   what the story is all about, and that is Love. Love is beautiful, and motivates, and Dr. Schivago is what this is all about. Keira Knightley, and Hans Matheson really have to be the most beautiful people that are in show business (in the motion picture business). These people(Keira and Hans) have been blessed not only with talent/acting ability but with super looks....Dr.SchiVago(2003 Re-Make), is really a Classic.
   
    

10. Different and better , 2003-11-16
    I saw the David Lean version many years ago and at a much younger age; I remember mostly snow and cold and not really getting it - the great love story.

    So I watched this version with a largely open, if not blank, mind.

    It was one of the most moving films I've seen in a number of years. Unlike some other viewers, I did find the music compelling, achingly sad even. And however they did it, the whole cast made me care about them, feel both their passion and pathos. It was indeed a depressing film, but much like the characters in Les Miserables, at least for me, the characters in Zhivago left me moved, touched, and - who knows - perhaps a bit changed by my own experience of the heroism and tragedy of their lives. I never looked here for the wide expanses and scenic vistas of the 1965 version, and so I did not miss them. But one can always hope to be moved, and I was; it seems that that is what film, as art, can most aspire to.

MARK LAWSON:
It is probably better known as a screen story than a book now. Did they make a case for doing it again?

GERMAINE GREER:
I'm puzzled. It's not a successful novel - it's a failed epic. It needs scale. The idea of doing it on the small screen seems perverse. There is only one way to do it, to turn it into a soap opera with a historical background. Then, to cross-cut rapidly, to give people one liners, single interchanges, so that you never develop any kind of epic swell...

Doing it this way also leaves you wanting. You need to know how Lara's relationship developed and you don't as you only see it in glimpses. It assumes you know the history, but you are at sea. You are not given a notion of what year you are in, or even the city. I don't understand why they did this.

EKOW ESHUN:
I disagree. This is working in the shadow of the book and of the David Lean film, as a consequence it goes from epic to intimacy. It's about the intensity of the triangular relationship. It's about love and the loss of love.

The background may be assumed, but we get amazing camera work. It's always moving around, focusing on the faces, pulling us right back. We get genuine footage from pre-revolutionary Russia. I think it's a great thing if a Sunday night documentary assumes knowledge of politics and history.

MICHAEL GOVE:
The use of archive looked amateuerish. It looked as if a sixth-former were making a series for the History Channel and doing it badly. The inter-cutting was interesting, but the cutting back to the domestic doesn't work at all. It jars. Considering that they got a proper film director in, I'm amazed that this is a result.

Even when we come to the intimacy, there are visual clichés aplenty. The moment that Yuri sees Lara through a window is done with no subtlety at all. The scene through the mirror is one of the most obvious clichйs in visual direction.

EKOW ESHUN:
I disagree. This is a romantic drama. The point is it's about two people. There is a glass between them - you call it a cliché, but for me it's an archetypal device about divided love. It's about politics played out through human emotion.

MICHAEL GOVE:
But there is no evidence of emotional depth. Lara's progress is played in a fantastically anaemic way. There is little sympathy for her. Even the seducer is a moustache-twisting villain.

Замечательный сериал, хотя и расходится во многом с книгой Пастернака (место смерти Живаго и пр.), но актеры подобраны потрясающие. Когда перечитываю "Живаго" Лара - это безусловно лицо Киры, а Живаго - Матисона.

В этом прекрасном фильме, как и в некоторых других, есть ляп костюмера: портупея, надетая через левое плечо (у Алавердова и другого ГПУшника). Портупея всегда носилась и носится через правое плечо, поскольку подавляющее большинство людей - правши. Удивительно, как эта ошибка в ношении армейской амуниции кочует из одного фильма в другой. Неужели в съёмочных коллективах нет людей, служивших в армии?

Составителям Ну,ну "Доктор Живаго" Д.Линча был снят в 1945 году говорите! Значит Омар Шариф снимался в нем в возрасте 13 лет, а Джули Кристи и того пуще, в 4 года. Круто, ничего не скажешь.

Один из любимых моих сереалов!Только британцы смогли экранизировать такую сложную книгу так интрестно и правдоподобно.После Киры Найтли другие претенденк на роль Лары просто смешны, а Живаго- просто супер! А сколько боли в глазах! никако старый меньшиков не сравниться!

Фильм очень понравился,книгу не читала,поэтому не с чем сравнивать...Как правило,на экране нельзя передать всю глубину чувств и эмоций,которые можно прочесть в книге.Так что лучше рассматривать по отдельности.Но фильм очень и очень ничего,не самое худшее произведение иностранцев о России...

Здесь нас британцы с американцами переплюнули. Их Живаго куда душевнее фильм, а концовка очень красивая. А у нас всё разговор о жизни, в которой нет любви. А заморский вот только с любовью, только с любовью…

Жить и сгорать...
Это мой любимый мини-сериал, и он нравится мне гораздо больше его русского аналога. От жестокости некоторых сцен действительно бросает в дрожь, а от ужаса и жалости текут слёзы. Одни моменты заставляют ненавидеть то, какой была страна, а другие — по-настоящему гордиться ей и, особенно, некоторыми ее сынами.

Из Ханса Матсона получился вполне достоверный Живаго, а Кира Найтли с длинной русской косой вполне сошла за Лару. Актерский состав мне действительно понравился, позволив полностью насладиться экранизацией одной из моих самых любимых книг.

Я пока не видела ничего, что произвело бы на меня такое же сильное впечатление. Незабываемо.

Мне этот фильм понравился. Я имею в виду игру актёров, работу сценариста (Эндрю Дэйвис — лучший мастер в своём деле) и режиссёра. Начало фильмо, однако, для тех, кто любит драмы, но я из их числа.

Актеры здесь гораздо лучше, чем в русской версии! И как бы я ни любила Меньшикова, но Ханс подходит на роль Живаго гораздо больше! Хотя бы по возрасту!

Не очень люблю Киру, но здесь она вполне вписалась в образ Лары, и что самое главное, не испортила фильм! Снято хорошо, хотя многие диалоги вырезали.

Душевный фильм, но не надо англичанам и американам снимать о России.

Иностранцы явно постарались, однако, в фильме таки не хватает чего-то нашего, хотя смотреть очень приятно и интересно. Даже захотелось за книгу сесть.

Уж где этой иностранщине поганой понять нашу сущнось.Это какая такая сущность необыкновенная! Может вы Достоевского обчитались. Американы, англичаны,какой сарказм. Может поэтому нас везде ненавидят. Мы же экранизируем их классику,и не всегда удачно,как у нас сейчас пишут. Один скандал с нашим "Идеальным мужем"чего стоит,когда на показе в Лондоне люди с кресел падали от хохота.История была громкая,об этом даже в "Советском Экране" написали.Какие все стали вдруг патриоты .Главное с чего?
